Someone should tell her she's really annoying - Conflict in Decision making

50 people in a room to make decision but “their” grades, what you get is shouting, chaos and just plain insanity.

During the class project I chose to avoidance to handle the conflict. I felt that it would be impossible for that many students to agree on a compromise. I felt that everyone would try to get the best for a few people and would not consider the entire class. Knowing the results of the decision process and the communication patterns of the class would chose collaborating to handle the conflict to get a more desirable result. Although it requires more time than was allotted in class, the sheer number in the class makes collaborating better. Forming groups and coming up with a proposal within the group is much better than everyone shouting their idea. It also allows the entire class to focus on fewer but vetted alternatives to work to make a decision on.

  1. hey Collis,

Avoidance is what I was doing at first because I got a 87 and I was happy with it. But then after hearing all the weird proposals I chose to be an accommodator and thinking what would be the best proposal for everyone. I wanted the higher of the two tests to be counted twice even though the 7 point curve would have benefited me more. Either way at the end we got everything even though it wasn’t easy.

  2. haha, in the class, I just kept silent and listened to what those "leaders" proposed. The idea to combine two proposals maybe me to "shout" out first, I think. If everybody kept shouting out, the chaos couldn't be handled any way. Some people needed to be listeners.

  3. You're right Collis, but in the end I feel the class benefited as a whole. And you came out with a superb grade anyway, so your fine :)

  4. I agree that we should have formed groups. It would have definitely taken less time... But it is always not easy to come up with decision that requires 100% of votes.

  5. Avoidance was my strategy for this activity. It was very frustrating to see how one person could be so annoying that she was able to disintegrate half of the class from most of the activity. In the end when Marc and other students went and gave better ideas we were able to get the results everybody needed.
